Organ Restoration Update

The Organ Fund currently stands at around £54,000. This includes an advance of £7,500 from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. Geoffrey Coffin, the organ builder, has ordered £15,000 worth of equipment for the restoration. On receipt of his invoice for this the Foundation for Sport and the Arts has undertaken to release a further £7,500. When Mr Coffin has taken delivery of the new equipment he will provide an up-to-date estimate of the cost of the restoration work. At current prices, based on inflation at the rate of 3% per annum, I estimate that this will be in the region of £80,000, minus £15,000 for the equipment already purchased and excluding VAT. (We can now reclaim VAT, effectively reducing the cost of the restoration by around £16,000.) Assuming that the revised estimate is not substantially higher than anticipated and subject to continued local fundraising efforts and resolution of the VAT cash-flow issue, we should be ready to proceed with the restoration in late 2008 or early 2009.

The Adopt an Organ Pipe scheme has realized well over £3,000 to date. It has the potential to raise £14,500 in total. Many pipes remain available for adoption. Future sponsors are requested to check the availability of 16-foot (£20) and 2-foot (£5) pipes. I can be contacted by telephone on (1470) 01302 844643 or by email on vernonhoyle@lineone.net. At present many mixture (£20), 8-foot (£15) and 4-foot (£10) pipes remain available. The Adopt an Organ Pipe scheme affords a unique opportunity for sponsors or their assignees to be listed in a historical document which will be preserved for posterity in the church archives. If you have not already participated in the scheme, please so as soon as possible and encourage your friends, relatives and colleagues to do likewise.

Future fundraising events include the following:

  • Coffee mornings on April 28th, August 25th and December 1st;
  • Easter, Harvest and Christmas raffles;
  • Concert by the Thurnscoe Harmonic Male Voice Choir on October 6th;
  • Concert by the Scunthorpe Male Voice Choir on April 19th 2008.

If you have an idea for a fundraising effort, I would be delighted to hear from you.

The next meeting of the Organ Action Group will take place on Wednesday May 9th at 7 p.m. in the Parish Office. All are welcome.
